The 16th edition of the Simultan Festival takes place between September 11-19, 2021 in Timișoara (European Capital of Culture 2021), with the theme “Unstable state of affairs”.
Simultan is an annual festival dedicated to interdisciplinary arts – emerging media projects, experimental music and audio-visual projects, in order to support new forms of artistic expression. The festival hosts annual live audiovisual performances, video art screenings, exhibitions, conferences and workshops in which some themes and methods are: stylistic eclecticism, the relationship between man and automation, recycling or ecological themes, dry lyricism – digital, fusion acoustic and electronic instruments, expanded cinema, jovial live sound collage, as well as reflection on the political valences of sound.
“It is important to understand not only what is happening, but also what is the potential of this transformation of the world following this crisis. The hardest thing is to tolerate uncertainty and the unknown in a world where we have come to believe that we are in control, but nature proves otherwise. Learning to tolerate insecurity and the unknown brings us closer to our human condition, fragile and precarious as it is, and the sign is, perhaps, to become human again, that is, to allow ourselves to be vulnerable, fragile, dependent on each other. It is a time to look to the future and imagine what we want our lives to look like from now on”.
Life, as we knew it, is changing radically and will probably take a different form someday, providing a good opportunity to test ourselves and develop our ability to adapt to reality.
Transcultures presents a video selection in connection with the No Lockdown Art initiative (initiated in spring 2020, during the first confinement, in partnership with the European Pepinires of Creation), as well as the performance Sonic Dreams by Paradise Now and Régis Cotentin.

No Lockdown Art – Video Selection
Dans le cadre du projet No Lockdown Art initié par Transcultures et les Pépinières européennes de Création lors du premier confinement lié à la pandémie du Covid-19 pour soutenir des projets artistiques contemporains susceptibles d’être diffusés en ligne, plusieurs vidéos ont été réalisées par des artistes (visuels, sonores, multimédiatiques…) intégrant la dimension audio et expérimentale dans des création d’esthétiques diverses qui échappent aux classifications traditionnelles et offrent un regard poétique et différencié sur notre monde mutant.
L’incertitude (No Lockdown Drift 2), Pastoral, BE/FR, 2020, 5’09’’
Le duo Pastoral (Christophe Bailleau et Philippe Franck) propose un deuxième volet à sa correspondance audio-visuelle entamée avec la vidéo ‘Lockdown Drift ‘ lors du premier confinement du Covid-19.
Lors de l’hiver 2020-21 (second confinement), chacun a envoyé à l’autre des images tournées dans son environnement (réel et imaginaire) immédiat (Mons et Huy, en Wallonie-Belgique) puis la composition instrumentale commune est venue en bande-son mêlant guitares langoureuses, basse sinueuse, flux granulaire électronique, flutes et percussions primitives.
D’abord énigmatique et brumeux, ces images soniques / sons iconiques nous emmènent dans un itinéraire clair-obscur. Dans les rues et les forets délaissées, un jardin étrangement enchanté et les non lieux urbains, une présence féerique et des ombres fugitives semblent vouloir nous indiquer dans un espace-temps hésitant entre nocturne et diurne, des signes nous permettant de sortir du labyrinthe de la grisaille et d’avancer vers une possible lumière.

Dans un jeu de prismes, filtres et miroirs, Alain Wergifosse propose quelques fragments de traitements opto-mécaniques sur la lumière pure et sur quelques images numériques mises en feedback vidéo.
Ces images et sons sont issues d’un projet d’installation vidéo multicanale en work in progress pour la résidence croisée Vice Versa 2020-21 entre Transcultures (BE) et La Chambre Blanche (QBC).

Panacée/pænəˈsiːə/ du latin panacēa, du grec ancien πανάκεια (panákeia), de πανακής (panakḗs, “tout-guérison”), de πᾶν (pân, “tout”) (équivalent à l’anglais pan-) + ἄκος (ákos , “guérir”). Panacea est une vision, celle de la guérison à travers les traditions – devenir soleil – sur les noms du pissenlit. Panacea est un rituel de passage, une recherche d’un lieu d’appartenance à travers une connexion avec des systèmes écologiques.

Visions of inside est la première vidéo réalisée à partir de la base de données du Common Ground Project initiée par Kika Nicolela en avril 2020 en réaction à la crise de la Covid-19.
Il favorise la création d’une base de données partagée de vidéos, de sons et de textes d’artistes du monde entier, réfléchissant aux multiples enjeux soulevés par la crise et le verrouillage.
Surtout, l’objectif du Common Ground Project est d’utiliser collectivement la création comme moyen de communion et de résistance.

Triptyque Prototype est une énigme à la temporalité éclatée qui permet des lectures croisées, associatives. Sa protagoniste (la danseuse Marilyn Daoust sur une chorégraphie de Manon Oligny) est en tension entre la poupée ou l’androïde et la femme de chair.
Cette vidéo filmée à Montréal en 2015, dans les cadre du projet de performance interdisciplinaire Les Oracles (initié par Productions Rhizome-Québec en partenariat avec Transcultures-Belgique) a été finalisé à Bruxelles au printemps 2020 avec une bande-son minimaliste de Paradise Now (BE).

Ces riens essentiels est un work-in-progress infini, initié lors du premier confinement Covid-19.
Le voyage a commencé en 2018 lorsque Gauthier Keyaerts était en Bretagne, photographiant des images de l’océan, du rivage, des lichens … Il en a ramené cette énergie et ce sentiment de spiritualité particuliers (ressentis par André Breton).
Cela l’a aidé depuis mars 2020 à se concentrer sur l’essentiel : la famille, le corps, la nature (insectes, arbres, fleurs…), l’amour… ce sublime chaos.

After Covid_19 fait partie des recherches sur les paysages de la catastrophe menées par Philippe Boisnard ces dernières années.
Cette création réalisée pendant le premier confinement global a été faite en live à partir de pure-data (logiciel de programmation graphique pour la création musicale et multimédia en temps réel) aussi bien en son qu’en image.
Ce paysage et son évolution tente de montrer esthétiquement l’émergence du vertige de l’épidémie. Comme une vision métaphorique, son crescendo est celui de la panique psychique de l’homme face à la déferlante de la pandémie.

Glasz DeCuir est l’identité en tant que réalisateur et scénariste machinima (= Imagerie Générée par Ordinateur) d’une plasticienne multimédiatique de Saint-Sébastien qui explore, de diverses manières, l’art des nouveaux médias et le cinéma numérique.
Glasz DeCuir a filmé et monté les images de la performance de Renata K (le projet expérimental de la flutiste classique Renata Kambarova, originaire d’Ouzbekhistan) lors de la première édition du Transonic Second Life Festival qui a eu lieu en février 2021 au Cat’s Club.
Une plongée dans des cyber dunes où l’avatar de Renata K erre, dans le sirocco sonique, sous un firmament cosmique, à la rencontre d’autres créatures intriguantes…

Cosmic Invertebrate Mindfuck – A Limb BE, 2020, 5’03
Cosmic Invertebrate Mindfuck découle de l’enregistrement d’une Transonic Second Life Session, série d’événements organisée dans Second Life par A Limb, Transcultures et les Pépinières Européennes de Création. Elle a été réalisée en décembre 2020 au Cat’s Circus dans Second Life.
La musique électro-cinématographique de A Limb interagit avec les visuels SaveMe Oh (NL) dans l’espace ouvert de Second Life. Cette vidéo fait partie de la collection Transonic Video Art – regroupant des œuvres vidéo où l’image et le son dialoguent en symbiose et où le travail sonore est au centre d’un travail de recherche multimedia.

No Lockdown Art – Video Selection
As part of the No Lockdown Art ongoing project initiated by Transcultures and the European Creation Nurseries during the first lockdown linked to the Covid-19 to support contemporary artistic projects likely to be broadcast online, several videos have been produced by artists (visual, sound, multimedia…) integrating the sonic and experimental dimensions in creations of various aesthetics, which escape traditional classifications and offer a poetic and alternative look on our mutant world.
L’incertitude (No Lockdown Drift 2), Pastoral, BE/FR, 2020, 5’09’’’
The Pastoral duo (Christophe Bailleau and Philippe Franck) offers a second part to their audio-visual correspondence started with the ‘Lockdown Drift’ video during the first containment of the Covid-19. During winter 2020-21 (second lockdown), each sent to the other images shot (real and imaginary) in their immediate environment (cities of Mons and Huy, in Wallonia-Belgium) then the common instrumental composition came in a soundtrack mixing languid guitars, sinuous bass, electronic granular flow, primitive flutes and percussions.
At first enigmatic and hazy, these sonic images / iconic sounds take us on a chiaroscuro route. In the abandoned streets and forests, strangely enchanted gardens and non-urban places, a magical presence and fleeting shadows seem to indicate to us in a space-time hesitating between night and day, signs allowing us to get out of the labyrinth of greyness and to advance towards a possible light.

It helped since March to focus on the essentials: family, body, nature (insects, trees, flowers…), love… this sublime chaos.

After Covid_19 is part of the research on disaster landscapes carried out by Philippe Boisnard in recent years. This creation, achieved during the first global confinement, was made live from pure-data (graphic programming software for musical and multimedia creation in real time) in both sound and image.
This landscape and its evolution attempts to aesthetically show the emergence of the vertigo of the epidemic. Like a metaphorical vision, its crescendo is that of the psychic panic of man in the face of the surge of the pandemic.

Glasz DeCuir is the identity as machinima (= Computer Generated Imagery) director and screenwriter of a multi-media visual artist from San Sebastian who explores, in various ways, the art of new media and digital cinema.
Glasz DeCuir filmed and edited the images of the performance of Renata K (the experimental project of classical flutist Renata Kambarova, from Uzbekhistan) during the first edition of the Transonic Second Life Festival which took place in February 2021 at the Cat’s Club .
A dive into cyber dunes where Renata K’s avatar wanders, in the sonic sirocco, under a cosmic firmament, to meet other intriguing creatures …

A Limb (BE) electronic cinematic music interacts with SaveMe Oh (NL) visuals in the Second Life open space.
All was recorded live, during a streamed event, scheduled for Transcultures (as part of its ‘No Lockdown Art’ initiative), and organized by A Limb. It is a criticism of sex messages present on medias so often, and even more often during pandemic times. We are shooted more than ever with consumerist sex fucking our mind.

This World 04 in VR, included in the artwork XR i-REAL, imagined, programmed by Jonathan Juste and whose soundtrack is signed Paradise Now, is “architextured“ (-! Henri Lefebvre !-) around the totality of the words used in “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”, famous novel published by Lewis Carroll in 1865. Inside this Obscure World, “ob-scene” of the text (-! Georges Bataille !-), the words ®-CONSTITUTE as we progress walls of blinding texts/images progressively revealing passages, “Entre-eSPACES” (-! Carole Brandon !-) through which we can progress… The electro-rythmic-organic music of Paradise Now (BE/FR) roams the floating walls of this Lettrist maze as if looking for a mutant prey.
