Seeking out absence by wanting to see what once was and is no longer, capturing lingering marks and traces and bringing them back to life through sounds and images. Florence Defawes (laureat: MAP residence Langage Plus 2019) collects clues among objects that once belonged to those now gone and in places from which they have vanished.
By installing them in a new setting, she seeks to chronicle their story by inventing another through audiovisual or multimedia installations. Using this approach, she has defined a project that has connected various locations sites since 2014, with the aim of imbuing them with a unique character while also maintaining some sort of cohesion.
As part of a residency with the European Pepinieres of Creation, the next step in Defawes’s journey will be to borrow places, objects and stories from the city of Alma and its residents to retell their tales.
This two-month residency is supported by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and produced in collaboration with Transcultures and Centre SAGAMIE.
