For this first phase of a creative residency at Transcultures in La Louvière (BE), Tommy Lawson is scouting the site, both meticulously and poetically, by developing a “map of the territory” woven with sounds. He walks in the city listening to collect sounds, natural noises and those produced by human activity. He also conducts interviews with residents and/or users and passers-by of the chosen perimeter. It is a question here of putting one’s sensitivity on the alert to flush out the sound, to reveal unsuspected sound spaces. These collected materials will constitute the raw material of creation.

Then will come, in a second phase (another period of residence – finalization of production – is planned at the Transonic Lab of Transcultures in mid-June 23), the work of elaboration in the studio: selection, editing, mixing, transformation of the material into forms arranged sounds, building new perspectives, from carefully chosen points of hearing to draw astonishing landscapes, both poetic and moving.

The final result will be delivered on June 25 for the opening of the biennial of contemporary art and heritage ARTour (and as part of the events linked to the twentieth anniversary of City Sonic) in La Louvière in the form of a geolocated sound walk, under headphones, via the Soundways application, which participants will be able to experience under the guidance of the artist and then independently for the duration of ARTour until September 12, 2023.
