The Pépinières Européennes de Création are proud to co-produce “Spectres & Neons”, the long-awaited album by Belgian electronic sound pioneer Alain Wergifosse on the Transonic Label. This is his second album since the critical acclaim of its release “Deep grey organic” on Geometrik/Migrogami (Spain) in 1999 and an EP called “Flux & Densités” published on the Transonic bandcamp in 2020 as a result of an online Belgian/Canadian research/creation collaboration.

“Spectres & Neons” (both sound pieces and still images for a nomadic exhibition) was completed during a fruitful residency at the Transonic Lab. At once electronic and organic, lunar and earthy, present and fugitive, intriguing and tickling, micro and macroscopic, these pieces are precious nuggets that open the ears as much as the imaginary horizons.

Alain Wergifosse

Insatiable explorer of sound, image and the media since the 1980s, Alain Wergifosse amplifies all kinds of resonant objects and specializes in the electronic processing of feedback to achieve his organic compositions and improvisations. He has traveled the world solo and with various groups and collective projects (Obmuz, Macromassa, SpecOp, Colectivo Anatomic among others).

From his base in Barcelona, he composed, during ten years, the music and sound interactions of the shows Marcel lí Antúnez (ex La Fura dels Baus) and he collaborated with many artists of the experimental musical scene ( Zbigniew Karkowski, Cluster, Jaki Liebezeit, Francisco Lopez, Nad Spiro, Eli Gras,…) and actively participated in various adventurous initiatives in Spain and internationally.

In recent years, returning to Belgium, he has developed his visual work and produced immersive and interactive installations, self-generative videos, microscopies and other materialist compositions presented in several festivals and international events (City Sonic, MEM, Kikk, Semaine sound, Simultan, Transnumeriques, Pléiades…).

The audio material contained in this album is made of hundreds of fragments recorded between 1991 and 2022, some recorded live, others in studio or recorded from my RESONANT SPACE installations, combined and mixed in remembrance of many spectral neon nights.

The CD version of the album includes a 20 pages booklet featuring images which are part of the SPECTRES & NEONS series of long exposure photos of urban lights taken in motion, subtly modulated by the 50hz/60hz of the electric grid.

In this bandcamp version of the album (featuring 2 extra sonic pieces at the end of the album), each track has its own image (from the same series; some different than for the CD booklet selection); each image is autonomous and so is each sound piece.

The SPECTRES & NEONS photographs (square format of the size of a 33rpm album cover) are proposed in exhibitions around the world. They are a photographic version of the series RETINAL MUSIC of silent cinematic visual pieces where lights in motion acts like the needle of a record player sending to the brain imaginary sound sensations, thanks to some synesthetic imagination, in total silence.
