This November, the objkt.one platform will participate in Paris Photo, one of the world\u2019s most prestigious international photography fairs, celebrating its 27th edition with a return to the iconic Grand Palais venue. With the support of Transcultures, objkt.one will highlight a series of works by Lorna Mills, including a new large-scale installation featuring her signature animated GIFs.<\/p>\n

Lorna Mills, an internationally renowned artist, plays a key role in shaping our understanding of Internet subcultures and the visual language of memes, making her an essential figure in the digital program of Paris Photo. Mills often appropriates GIFs from the dark net, transforming and decontextualizing them into pixelated silhouettes that stand out against vivid color blocks, emphasizing their iconic and often unsettling visual qualities. These subjects are trapped in perpetual, anxious loops\u2014sometimes isolated, sometimes integrated into digital collages combining elements from various sources.<\/p>\n

In an era where GIFs and memes are often co-opted by reactionary political movements to spread (mis)information, Mills\u2019 art reclaims them, creating subversive digital mini-narratives that reflect the absurdities and idiosyncrasies of human behavior.<\/p>\n

Lorna Mills (Ca)<\/strong><\/h6>\n

\"\"<\/a>Lorna Mills is a Canadian artist from Yorkton, Saskatchewan, renowned for her work at the intersection of analog and digital media. Since the 1990s, she has been actively exhibiting internationally, exploring various mediums such as photography, Super 8 film, painting, and, more recently, animated GIFs, which she incorporates into immersive installations.<\/p>\n

She studied digital media at the University of Toronto and worked as a children\u2019s game programmer before specializing in video editing for digital platforms. Notable exhibitions include “Dreamlands” at the Whitney Museum, “Yellowwhirlaway” at the Museum of the Moving Image, and “Sea Change” at the P\u00e9rez Art Museum in Miami. In 2016, she also presented “Mountain Light\/Time” in Times Square, New York.<\/p>\n

Mills is recognized for her pivotal role in exploring Internet subcultures and the visual language of memes. She reappropriates GIFs found online, transforming them into works where pixelated silhouettes blend with vivid color blocks, creating loops that are both iconic and unsettling. Her work questions human behaviors and the absurdities of the digital age.<\/p>\n
